NOW WHAT?

MAKE A LIST OF YOUR DAMAGE

  • Walk around your house inside and out with a notepad.
  • Check your window screens for tears.
  • Check your windows for cracks or damage to the plastic beading.
  • Did you have any glass broken on your carpet or rugs?
  • Did your lawn furniture get damaged?
  • Check on your garden decorations too.
  • Check your spa covers, trampoline covers, tarps, etc for rips.
  • If you have a wood stained fence, patio or playground equipment, look for scuff marks.
  • Are the fins on your air conditioning unit damaged?
  • Do you have anything outside with moving parts? Does it still function correctly?
  • Are all of your outside lights still working?
  • If you have a pool, did you have to clean the storm damage out?
  • Did you lose any trees or have to do any trimming?
  • Did you lose electricity? Did you have any spoiled food as a result?
  • Are there any water stains on your ceilings? Look closely around your light fixtures, in the corners and around your chimney.

  • Set aside a time when you can be home to meet your DCC project manager for a free inspection.
  • Ask any questions you have about the claims process as we have a lot of experience in this area.
  • Your DCC project manager will be happy to go over any notes you have taken
  • We will complete a full roof inspection and access the level of damage and complete temporary repairs if needed.

STEPS TO FILING A CLAIM

  • If you have not already called your insurance agent, it is now time to report your claim.
  • Report any storm damage noted on your personal notes.
  • Make notes of who you are talking to, plus the date and time.
  • Request that the person coming out to inspect your damage (the adjuster) calls you in advance to make an appointment.
  • If your adjuster does not call you within 48-72 hours, call your insurance agent.
  • Once your adjuster calls to makes the appointment, advise them that you would like to have a project manager from Davis Custom Construction present at the time of the inspection. This will help save you time and we can help you through the process. DCC will not charge you a fee to meet with your adjuster.

MEETING THE ADJUSTER

  • Allow the adjuster and your DCC project manager to review the claim together. Offer your help or relax inside while the claim is being written.
  • Your DCC project manager and adjuster will then inspect, measure, and evaluate the storm damage to your home. This may take some time.
  • Avoid being confrontational at all costs. If you do not get everything paid, you still have the right to appeal later.
  • A professional contractor from DCC can help you with several levels of appeal if your claim is not paid to your satisfaction.
  • You will either be given a check for your damage on the spot or your adjuster will advise you when to expect payment. Also your adjuster will go over your paper work when completed. Both your adjuster and DCC project manager can answer any question you might have.

HANDLING THE FINANCES

    • Normally, you will receive two payments for your storm damage. The first payment will be the amount of repairs minus the depreciation and minus your deductible. Your depreciation should be recoverable once the work is complete or you are under contract to have the repairs done. We have a lot of experience in this area and will walk you through it.
    • If you have a mortgage, your check will include your mortgage company.
    • Call your mortgage company and find out if they have a local branch. Find out if there is any additional paperwork you will need from DCC or paperwork DCC will need to complete.
    • You may need a conditional lien release before the funds are released by your mortgage company.
    • Under most circumstances, you should not pay any money until it is time to order materials or your repairs are complete.

    ROOFING YOUR HOME

    • Clear a space on one side of your driveway for roofing materials. Avoid getting your car blocked in by the materials when they arrive.
    • Be sure to point out any sprinkler heads.
    • Your roof should not be torn off until you have materials in your driveway.
    • Take down any precious mementos, knick-knacks, shelves, picture frames or other wall-hanging valuables before the job starts.
    • There will be a DCC project manager present through out the day during your repairs. They will be able to communicate with you comfortably.
    • Please make sure we have access to electricity.
    • Our roofing crew will use a nail magnet to remove nails from your yard, driveway and flower gardens.
    • Your driveway will be swept each evening and the trash will be picked up at reasonable times throughout the day.

    FINAL INSPECTION AND PAYMENT

    • When your repairs are complete, walk around your home and inspect the job with your DCC project manager.
    • Make the final payment on your job after you have received a final lien release if needed.
    • File a copy of your contract, personal notes and copies of payment information away in a safe place.
